Another fantastic show was presented to the town of Vienna VA as the kidz from SOR (The School of Rock/Vienna) took the stage last Saturday night at the annual Viva Vienna Memorial Day Celebration. The lawn of the town green was packed with fans, old and young, as the band ripped into classic rock songs by Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Pat Benitar, the Eagles and many more. These kids have great talent and its always a pleasure to see them perform.

It was an absolutely perfect weekend for backpacking in the Shenandoah this past weekend as my friends and I of Troop 976 in Vienna VA hiked our way through to Duncan Knob, just outside of New Market Virginia. Many of our boys were out for their very first backpack overnighter including my son....and myself. The boys as well as adults had a blast of a good time deep in the woods, pushing ourselves, enjoying ourselves and learning many lessons along the way.

The boys built a massive, and one of the best, fire rings I've seen. We were in for quite a blaze.

An interesting story began to emerge late in the day. We were in the middle of no where, roughing it, with no water source. Everything we had we brought with us. We were all patting ourselves on the back for our 3-4 mile up hill journey. Around 4 pm a man with a camel back, trail shoes, and bib number on his shorts came racing through our campsite. Later another man, and another. Then some women. It didn't take us long to figure out we were on a major artery for an endurance race taking part that very day. These folks were participating in the Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 Mile Run and we were sitting at about the 70 mile mark!

All afternoon and late into the night these folks came very quietly up and over the crest where we camped. Every time one came through, the boys would pause to clap and cheer and wish the runners luck. You can see the smiles on their faces below as they ran into this unanticipated welcoming party. It was a hoot and a very positive inspiration for all of us. All night long we saw little LED lights come quietly through our camp. It was humbling and (almost) made us feel guilty for curling up in our warm sleeping bags and snoozing the night away.

As we broke camp and headed down the mountain we were still occasionally passed by the ultra runner who had literally been up all night running through the forest. Many appeared to be in their 50s and 60s. Every time they passed, the Troop would part like Moses parting the sea and cheer the runners on. I hope they all reached their personal goals and got home safely.

My son and I sharing in another beautiful view brought to us by Boy Scouts of America. You can't find moments like these in a video game.

Do You Remember Your First Concert?

Today is a great day as my son has turned 15! Happy Birthday Danny. He left for school with a smile on his face and a gleam in his eye. Last night his Dad treated him to his very first rock concert, and what it show it was. We ventured out to the Jiffy Lube Live Arena (formerly Nissan Pavilion) in Bristow Va to see none other than Pearl Jam, featuring Eddy Vedder (see review and more photos HERE). I had not been to a show like this in years and was very impressed. Getting to and from the venue was very easy. No problems what so ever. True to its form it was an eye opener for Danny and he seemed very entertained all night. He had our little Canon SD-1000 with him taking pictures of all kinds of things interesting only to a 15 year old (redneck girls, tailgating, beer lines, $35 t-shirts, you know the drill).

He seemed quite fascinated that you could find Beer at every turn.

I only had one moment of anxiety. As we sat down, there was only one row of empty seats in front of us before the aisle. Two no shows and our view would be spectacular. Within 60 seconds of the opening song in walks a guy and his girl. He looks like a cross between Howard Stearn and Weird Al Yankovich, and must have been about 6'10". Sitting down he was still as tall as me standing. All Danny and I could do was laugh and he snapped this shot.

Needless to say I was doing a little head bob dance through most of the night. Not to fear, we saw and heard plenty.

Dad and son having a conversation. Only problem was Danny was conversing with someone else. I think it is safe to say we made it through the night without me embarrassing him. Actually, he thinks I'm pretty cool for taking him :) Now I have a concert buddy!

Our budding musician's collection of guitars. He added a bass for his birthday. We are extrememly proud of him in every aspect. Perhaps he will be on the big stage one day. As I told him last night. Every famous musician once sat in the audience holding onto a dream. I think the kid's got talent. Time will tell.

Silas Burke House; Burke VA

I had a recent opportunity to tour around the Silas Burke House on 'Top O' the Hill' in Burke Va. The house is owned by my father's friend Susie Fowler and her husband. Susie grew up in this house with a large family and has many great stories to share. The house is relatively unchanged from her childhood and included a working Edison Phonograph from the early 1900's. For reasons I can't explain I walked away with out getting a shot of that wonderful piece of machinery.

First Communion Fun

This past weekend was a triple play as my son, Reilly, and gorgeous nieces, Rachel (below) and Bridget (below Rachel) made their First Holy Communion in three separate parishes. However the party was one big gathering of all cousins at the Glass home in Vienna. Our kids are great cousins and even better friends. The pictures tell the story. We are very proud of them. Congratulations kids!

Photo Restoration Project ~ Great Nana Lives On

Along with my appreciation for vintage furniture and machinery comes photograpy as well. I've been honing my restoration skills with new ideas I learned while at Photoshop World from my friend Matt Kloskowski. My most recent project was my wife's dear Grandmother, Angela Arrigo Pope, or Great Nana as we knew her. Nana lived to 95 and was as sweet and as nice an Italian women as you could fine. She passed a few years back.

I think the resulting photo came out well. She is still radiant as ever. The original scanned photo appears below.

Gone Antiquing in Leesburg, VA!

For those that know my wife Laura she has a keen interest for antiques. She can find some real diamonds in the rough and our house is nicely decorated with many interesting items. Over the years her interest has rubbed off on me. I love the idea of vintage furniture, especially when coupled with moving parts or machinery. It makes me sit in wonder of the story behind the unique piece. Where has it been? Who bought it? And in some cases, how did it make it all this way and still be in such great shape.

Which lead us to this little beauty. We enjoyed a weekend away in Leesburg, VA where antiques are abundant. We popped in on the local 4H club where the annual antique show was in full swing. This is where we met Gib and Carol Wood of Heritage Antiques in Gainesville VA. Gib's passion is restoring Victor-Victrola Phonographs or Victor "Talking Machines" and a variety of other furniture. This little guy was manufactured in 1917 and is in great shape. After receiving a full education on the machine, and a demonstration, we were sold. Its a nice looking piece and fits really well in our little music room (see pic below). What was extra special was watching and listening to my mother tell stories of gathering with her brothers and sisters around the old Victrola in her childhood home in Richmond. That alone was worth the investment.

The music room was once the nursery for our three boys. We have since removed one wall and converted it to this room above, all the while hoping to inspire our boys with music. Our eldest plays guitar, trombone, and sings. The younger two are very adept at....Rock Band on the Wii. Does that count?

Double Down in Washingtonian Magazine's Monthly Photo Contest

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday to see that two of my photos were selected in the April photo contest in Washingtonian Magazine. The theme was local architecture. One was selected as a finalist. The winner gets printed in the June issue. You can vote for it by clicking here (VOTE) if you like. I've managed to sneek 3 in before but have never won. But that's OK...its nice to be recognized. I have reposted the pics below. You can see them in a larger format by double clicking the picture.

Popped into DC with the family last Sunday to visit the National Museum of American History. Its gotten quite an overhaul and was quite nice. Hands down favorite exhibit was the "Price of Freedom" which takes you from the Revolutionary War through the Gulf War. I highly recommend a visit if you haven't been in a while.

Geek Speak: My self portrait was taken with my Canon 7D mounted on a mini tripod. Its a three shot HDR image married in Photomatix software and tweaked in Adobe Literoom and CS4. By the way....CS5 came out yesterday. Can you feel the excitement? Its all ready on order. Wahoo!

Spent some of spring break visiting the in-laws and touring the Del Ray Beach area. Nice place, Lots of activity. The first place I've been where the ol' timers trick out their golf carts. I think his name was Inspector Gadget.

RETENTION.....Al Lambert Signature Poster

One of my favorite photos was selected by the National Capital Area Council for Boy Scouts for a motivational poster called "Retention" and signed by former NCAC Scout Executive Al Lambert. The image was made in the early morning on Lake Merriweather, on the Camp PMI dock, at the Goshen Scout Reservation in Goshen Va as the boys sat waiting for their swim test.

Meet my friend Kelly. I had not seen her in about 26 years. She and I worked together many years ago at the old Woodward and Lothrop Department Store in Alexandria, Virginia. We are talking 1984 here. She and I were just young adults trying to pass the time while working in the lamp and housewares departments on those long, boring, summer nights when no one was really interested in shopping. We became fast friends. For me, she made going to work more fun and I've never forgotten those great times. Always with a smile she simply made work more interesting.

Soon after my leaving for college we lost touch. She married and had two beautiful daughters. I never thought I would see her again then one day there it was...."Friend Me". Through the magic of FaceBook we rekindled an old friendship and I was able to have a quick visit and a cup of joe with her while in Orlando last week. I asked her to sit for a few pics. Still as radiant as ever.

Its been an unbelievably busy three days here at the Photoshop World Conference in Orlando. I've met so many new friends and many fantastic photographers that I aspire to be more like. I've learned so much it will take the rest of the spring and probably summer to absorb it all. The conference opened up with a rock show followed by many talented speakers including Dr. Russell Brown, one of the early pioneers of Photoshop and an Adobe employee for 25 years and of course Mr. Scott Kelby himself. Many cool gags and videos followed.

It's after 1:00 AM on Thursday...er...Friday morning and I've just gotten out of the legendary Midnight Madness. What fun. Thanks Matt Kloskowski for sneaking me in. I had the priveledge of meetng Matt at one of Jeff Revell's photowalks two years ago and he's been a good friend, looking out for me at every turn while I'm here. I have many pics to post and share over the next few weeks. Here are just a few.

Whatever your level of photography you should seriously consider attending at least one conference. These people know how to have fun.....and you learn a bunch of cool stuff too.

Photoshop World Conference, Orlando

I'm extremely excited today as I am headed down to Orlando for the Photoshop World Conference. I'll be there all week taking classes taught by some of the world's best photographers. I have a special photo shoot set up tomorrow with internationally famous National Geographic Photographer Joe McNally and Pro Nature Photographer Moose Peterson. We'll be hopping a bus to the Latin District in Tampa bay to do some on location urban photography.

Later I'll be hooking up with my friend Matt Kloskowski of Photoshop User TV fame as well as some local photographer friends of mine from the DC area, Jeff Revell and Mike Meyers. Its going to be one big party and I finally get to be a part of it!

I hope to have many cool photos to post for the rest of the spring :)

And of course, thanks to my lovely bride Laura for supporting me on this great adventure. I would not have gone with out your love and encouragement.

Haven't posted in a few days. Been very busy with clients and kids, clients and kids, things are going well. I had a recent shoot up in Bethesda last week and popped in on my friends at the NCAC. I had been working with the marketing director to donate some of my work I had taken over several years at the Goshen Scout Reservation in Goshen VA. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into the lobby to see one very large HDR image I did of Lake Merriweather as seen from View Rock. Its a fantastic hike for the scouts with a beautiful view at the peak. Several more pics were hanging throughout the building.

Mad Brenda was not the least bit deterred by last night's snowstorm and rocked Jammin Java here in Northern Virginia. The music was fantastic and the crowd was loving it. Concert photography is challenging, more so when the night club in which you are in is very dimly lit.

The photos above were taken with a Canon 7D racked out at 6400 ISO, with a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 lens, tweaked in Adobe Lightroom, and denoised in CS4 using Topaz deNoise software. I think the result is fair. Gotta keep trying to find that diamond in the rough.

The entire evening was broadcast by my friend Jim Folliard of Fairfax Video Studio on uStreamTV so my kids were able to watch the band (and me) on my MAC. How cool is that?

My two youngest sons and I popped into the Udvar-Hazy Center today to catch the latest IMAX movie "Magnificent Desolation; Walking on the Moon." We never really get tired of tooling around this easy-to-get-to and easy-to-get-around museum. It should be a must stop on your tour through DC. And if you live here and haven't been......get out and go see it. Make sure you catch a movie and take a ride in a simulator, my boy's personal favorite.

Well after 40 some years I finally made it down to the Washington National Cathedral while chaperoning my son's recent field trip. What an amazing place. A photographer could get lost for hours with so much to see and shoot. I definitely need to travel back there on my own time......tripod in hand. Here are just a few of many from the day. Enjoy. There are many alters throughout the Cathedral. Most interesting about this one is that its a mini alter with mini chairs for small children.

Last Friday night I had a session with some very talented dancers from Cuppett Performing Arts Center in Vienna, VA. The evening proved challenging and a lot of fun to "get the shot" technically correct for their performance program yet to be published. The girls certainly knew exactly what they needed to do. They worked extremely hard and are dedicated to their craft.

Sometimes I see things on the side of the road I just have to jump out and photograph. Of course my wife likes this as I am now more likely to stop for an antique store than I used to be!

This cool camper bus was parked on the side of Route 12 just North of the Whalehead Club on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I love the spiked front wheels. Modern day Ben Hurr.

Happy New Year from the Outer Banks. We are down for a few days of friends and family. Great opportunity to shoot some pics. The fog rolled in and I believe I found the only spot of sunshine gleaming down on this Boathouse at the Whalehead Club.

Also, a great big Happy Birthday to my father who is 79 years young today. Pictured below with his beloved wife Pat and their many grandchildren. Have a great day Dad. We love you.

Saint Phil?

While attending the recent funeral of my Uncle Charles, I turned to capture this pose of my Uncle Phil (the brother of the deceased) and thought little of it at the time. It was only later, as I downloaded the image onto my computer, that I noticed my camera had somehow captured this majestic image, an aura perhaps, gracefully cradling my uncle. Seems a fitting image of Phil after all those long years looking out for his 5 sisters, wife, children, great grandchildren and countless nephews and nieces.

A Memorable Day

Friends and family gathered today at St. Benedict Church in Richmond Va to say fair well to Charles D. Curley. The sun shown brightly, the cold held off, a loan diesel train horn blew in the distance and he was laid to rest.

Today my dear Uncle Charles Curley passed away at the age of 88 in Richmond, Virginia. The oldest of eight kids he is pictured above in what is a classic, and favorite, photo of mine. It should have been around the early 1940's when it was taken. The young lady on the left is none other than my mother, Pat (Mema), still alive and well and caring for her devoted husband, all her children and grandchildren.

Uncle Charles (or Choo Choo as he was known to his own grandchildren, and great grandchildren) was a very interesting, funny, fellow and was dearly loved. About a year ago I had the opportunity to photograph Charles and spend some time with him in his home. Having landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day +1 his stories of the war run deep. His memory of that time culminated in a book he published years ago which is a fascinating read. It was also during this time in France that he learned to drive steam locomotives and his love for trains never diminished. Charles was very active in Richmond for a man his age and will be very missed by his family and friends.

A Baker With a Big Heart

Our Cubz gathered last night for the annual Holiday Bake Off where the kids bake goodies during the week and enter them for a chance to win. Coming in First Place in the Artistic Category for his cupcake rendition of a scout camp out was my good buddy and Webelo Luke. The scene below is worthy of a ribbon for sure.

What I had not noticed until Luke brought it to my attention was that he had carefully crafted a miniature of myself, the Cubmaster, fast asleep under my "I love Boy Scouts" blanket and my camera safely perched upon my chest.

Its many small moments such as this that make being a scout leader well worth the time and effort. I was touched.

Yesterday I got to play fashion photographer with my beautiful niece Emma. Emma is preparing for another ballet performance for this Holiday season. She is a delightful model and willing to work hard for the end result. She has a keen interest in photography as well. Emma hails from China and is one of two children adopted by my oldest brother and his wife. They are expecting two more in the new year. Her brother Kevin appears with her below. He is quite the dresser and loves to look his best. It is great to visit with these very happy children. Good luck Emma.

Love Without Boundaries Champions

It was a fantastically beautiful morning in Washington for the 34th running of the Marine Corps Marathon. Congratulations to my brother Ben and my niece Caitlin (Ben's oldest daughter and my Godchild) for finishing AGAIN and continuing to help those in need.

I have posted here before that my brother, his wife Sandi, and their family of 7 are very involved in the charity LOVE Without Boundaries. They and a number of other runners raised over $20,000 dollars to help provide care and support for orphans and impoverished children in China and to assist in finding them homes here in the United States.

Its easy to see the passion these runners and their families share in their cause. You can help too by checking out the link above. Sandi, Ben and family are anticipating expanding to 9 children when two more China babies (older China babies) will hopefully join them this year.

Run Ben Run. The last corner before the finish. I was ready to hop the fence and administer CPR....but he finished strong!

A quick photo at the finish. Other dedicated team members were still on the course battling the odds. While they appear to be fresh and recovered, I can tell you that each (young or older) slowly inched their way to the shade to take this picture. This is a tough event and humbling to watch.

The good General, otherwise known as Mr. Paul Hadfield, put on a great show of juggling, uni-cycling, slapstick, and lots of Tom Foolery. The boys had a blast. When fall arrives its camping time for Cubs from Pack 976 of Vienna, Va. To get our new Tigers and new recruits out into the woods we head out to Camp William B. Snyder. This 350-acre camp, located in Haymarket, Virginia is the latest and greatest camping experience offered by the National Capital Area Council and the Boy Scouts of America. The boys enjoy a weekend of activities like BB guns, archery, the Big Dig, hiking, and of course the late night fire and roasting marshmallows. Hats off to Eric Steele, the Camp Director, who keeps things rolling along at such a large facility.

On our return trip from my nephew's wedding we cruised through Strasburg in Lancaster County, Pa. Its easy to forget how much we always enjoyed this place when our oldest son was a toddler. Trains are everywhere you turn and the Amish landscape is beautiful. We used to come up twice a year. We will have to put this stop back on our list. The photography opportunities are endless and I have almost forgotten how much I truly love trains. The sound, smell, and thunder as the huge locomotives roll by is unforgettable. I have a few more cool pics I am working on. More to come but for now I think my family is waiting on wedding photos :)

I'm sold on Paul Green's School of Rock Music/Vienna. What a great event. All the kids had tremendous fun at Jammin Java. Their talent runs deep, down to the youngest of the kids. Theme for the night was all Beatles covers. The kids nailed them and the crowd loved it. Chilling to see your child on stage enjoying himself. What he did last night and today I always wished I could do. Great show. Good job Danny!

A Saint on This Earth

Today my wonderful mother celebrated her 75th year. She continues to be an inspiration to many, including her 7 children and 24 grandchildren. When not helping with her newest infant grandchild to her baby, Eileen, you can still find her at the INOVA Fairfax Child Care Center, volunteering for St. Michael's Parish, or doting on her husband of 53 years, Ben, my father, who still worships her every act of kindness. She is our Rock. We love her dearly and couldn't imagine a world without her.

Msgr. John B. Brady, Chaplain

Meet my friend Msgr. Brady. Msgr. lives at the Goshen Scout Reservation outside of Lexington, Va. during the summer months while the boys are in camp. He spends his days walking the Goshen Beltway, visiting the boys in camp to educate them on the importance of living the scout oath, celebrating mass for scouts and leaders, and honing his photography skills, which gives us plenty to talk about.

When not in camp, Msgr. keeps busy with the National Catholic Committee on Scouting and a variety of other duties. He resides in Bethesda.

I always look forward to seeing him and Goshen would not be the same without him.

Our troop usually arrives in large numbers which allows us the opportunity to have our own mass at our campsite. Makes for a very special moment for the boys.
